Making sandals fosters artistry, skills

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The mission of our school is to provide not only classroom experience but diverse activities inside and outside the classroom — especially during summer school. For example, the girls made their own pairs of sandals. The children also receive important skills such as hand-washing and hygiene, which are included in the garden-growing class.

Summer school and fun

Posted by: | Comments (0)

For July and most of August the children will go to a daily summer school to enjoy arts and crafts, as well as play. Although crowded by our standards, this little plastic swimming pool has allowed the kids a first-time experience…and relief from the heat of summer. Most of these kids have never even been to the ocean nearby. But as you can see, the size of the body of water doesn’t matter.

40-foot cargo container ready to ship

Posted by: | Comments (0)

We are finally ready to send off the 40-foot container, about 3/4 full which holds a ton of wonderful stuff for the children. Educational materials (desks, chairs, whiteboards., sports equipment (basket and backboard for basketball, soccer goals, tons of balls and jerseys), bags of clothes, tools…even a piano.

A big thanks to all of those who participated, especially to our long-time and generous friends, Geoff Keough and family and his company Enviremedial Services, Inc. His employees were awesome today making this happen. Edeline and Isememe were beaming with the knowledge that their tubs, filled with all kinds of items not available to most Haitians, would soon be with their family and friends. It was a good day for us.

Update on Jamesely’s club foot surgery

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Jamesely, one of our second graders at Institut Edeline Felizor, is in Toledo, Ohio recuperating well after his latest operation — with new pink leg casts and riding a pony for the first time. Jamesely was born with club feet, but through the efforts of Dr. Rich Paat, we were able to bring him to Ohio for surgeries to correct the disability. We are hoping he will return home in January…walking to school rather than being carried by his father.
